National Scholarships to pursue Overseas Education for an Indian Student


More and more Indian students are moving abroad in pursuit of world-class education and globally recognized degree certification. According to a report by the Government of India, the approximate number of Indian students studying overseas in the year 2018 was found to be 752,725.
If you don’t know, here’s a list of the scholarships given by Indian Government as major funding options for overseas education.

•    Padho Pardesh Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Education Loan for Overseas Studies
•    National Overseas Scholarship for Scheduled Caste Students
•    National Overseas Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe Students
•    Maharashtra Govt Scholarship for Open Category students for overseas studies

Padho Pardesh Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Education Loan for Overseas Studies

As per this scheme, a certain percent of concession is applied to the rate of interest. It is offered to the meritorious Indian students who are graduates and want to pursue master’s, M.Phil or Ph.D programme. A student must apply for the scheme before the deadline.

Dr. Ambedkar Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Education Loan for Overseas Studies

This is one of the Indian Government Scholarships for overseas education offered to Indian students who are academically brilliant. It is provided as a subsidy on the rate of interest payable by the borrower. It is applicable throughout the moratorium period, that is, during the course period plus six months or one year after employment. The student must have enrolled for master’s, M.Phil or Ph.D programmes in a recognized foreign university.

National Overseas Scholarship

An initiative of the Central Government towards imparting scholarships to economically backward students belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities was recently launched in India. According to the statistics, 124 applications were registered under the scheme in the academic year 2018-2019.

For SC students

Students enrolling for post-graduation and research programmes in accredited universities/institutions only are considered for the scholarship. The university for which students are applying to should be amongst top 200 world ranking universities as per the QS World University Ranking. The academic score secured at the bachelor and master level must be 55% along with work experience in the related field. Quite interestingly, the scholars are not burdened with a thing! Everything right from tuition fees to insurance is funded by the Government.

For ST students
As per the scheme of National Overseas Scholarship for ST students, a candidate-
1.    Must be under 35 years of age
2.    Should be pursuing master, PhD or post-doctoral programme in an accredited university/institution
3.    The candidate should have secured 55% and must have at least 2 years of work experience in the related field.

Maharashtra Government Scholarships for Studies Abroad

For Open and OBC category students
Maharashtra State Government launched a scholarship scheme for abroad studies for students belonging to Open, OBC and Special Backward Class (SBC) communities in November 2018. The university for which students are applying to should be amongst top 200 world ranking universities as per the QS World University Ranking.

Terms and Conditions
1.    The scholarship would be made available for one-year of post-graduation diploma courses, two-years of post-graduation and four-years of the PhD programme.
2.    Only 20 eligible OBC, Open, VJNT and SBC students would be awarded this scholarship every year.
3.    30% of seats are reserved for women.
4.    The annual income of the family should not be more than INR 6 lakhs per annum.

There are foreign universities offering scholarships as well. So, do check for the scholarships offered by the universities.
